Geologically dramatic, bursting with exotic colour and warmed year-round by the Atlantic sun, Portugal’s most enchanting island is a place that keeps all its subtropical holiday promises. Pearl of the Atlantic, island of eternal spring…Madeira well deserves its fanciful nicknames and the affection visitors and locals alike feel for this tiny volcanic island that offers so much.
Repeatedly voted Europe's, and even the world's, top island destination, Madeira is a diverse place when it comes to holidaymaking. Black sand beaches, the frothing Atlantic, towering rock walls and gushing streams and irrigation channels make this an outdoor nirvana. But it's also a place of gentler pleasures such as wine tasting, visiting lush botanical gardens and watching embroiderers and wicker weavers at work. Hiking the levada irrigation channels is the top activity, with tens of thousands pulling on hiking boots to discover Madeira's secret interior.Play Video In 1419, when Portuguese seafarers happened on an uninhabited island in the North Atlantic, around 500 miles off the African coast, they were awed by the dense covering of greenery. Even today, after 600 years of human encroachment, their amazement is easy to understand. The variety of flora is astounding: groves of local mahogany, bushy strands of indigenous lily of the valley, and a laurel forest, the largest surviving relic of the vegetation that covered much of southern Europe at least 15 million years ago. Those first men who arrived on the island called it Madeira — the Portuguese word for wood. - Dive Mexico HighlightsDetailsIncluded
Diving in Madeira has become very popular in recent years.
The most beautiful diving sites are on the southeast coast of the island, especially in the marine park of Ponta de Sao Lourenço where the visibility exceeds 20 meters and where we can admire a drop-off covered with black coral. This area is accessible from the very close Marina of Quinta do Lorde. The Desertas Islands, southeast of Madeira, are a protected area for sea lions, a very rare species of monk seals. It is also possible to observe Bryde’s whales or sperm whales as well as common and spotted dolphins.
Around Porto Sano, there is the shipwreck of Madeirense, sunk in 2000 as part of a campaign to create artificial reefs. This wreck is one of the most popular sites in the East Atlantic.
Finally, around the islands “Ilheu de Climat” and “Ilheu de Baixo”, there are beautiful rocky reefs that are rich in life. Marine species include giant groupers, moray eels, barracudas, monkfish, sting rays and sometimes manta rays and mobula rays have been seen passing by.
Several species of crab are found around the island including the strange looking arrow crab. The jewfish is another beautiful sight and is an emblematic species of the Garajau Marine Reserve as well as the rare monk seal which can sometimes be spotted.
