DOSSIER: LEARN ABOUT REEF HEALTH, CORAL FRAGMENTATION, HOW TO DESIGN, INSTALL AND MAINTAIN ARTIFICIAL REEFS USING BIOROCK TECHNOLOGY

In conjunction with our Indonesian dive associates we offer an innovative programme aimed at restoring their reefs. The Biorock program is designed for gap year students, students looking for thesis and dissertation topics, people on career breaks and anyone interested in more than your average vacation! Certain areas of shallow water corals around the reef dependant islands have suffered damage by combinations of coral heatstroke, disease, land-based sewage, global sea level rising, over-fishing and direct physical damage. Help reef-dependent communities replenish their coral reefs.

Mission Statement

Once you learn to recognize what types of fish you see, you’ll find it easier to reference the exact species after a scuba dive. For example, a butterfly fish in the Caribbean has a similar shape to a butterfly fish in Southeast Asia, but colours and markings may be wildly different. If you know what fish family it belongs to, you can more easily look up the local name or at least be able to intelligently ask the local scuba instructor what you saw.

Ten percent of the big fish still remain. There are still some blue whales. There are still some krill in Antarctica. There are a few oysters in Chesapeake Bay. Half the coral reefs are still in pretty good shape, a jeweled belt around the middle of the planet. There's still time, but not a lot, to turn things around.
