Humpback whales are found in all of the world’s oceans, traveling amazingly long distances to eat and breed each year. The humpback gets its common name from the hump on its back that is visible as they prepare to dive, but the scientific name, Megaptera, which is Latin for “large wing,” in reference to their massive pectoral fins. Their tails are as distinctive as a human fingerprint, these patterns (in combination with shape, size, and scarring) have been used by scientists to identify and monitor individual whales since the 1970s.
