The cryptic teardrop crab (Pelia mutica) is named for its distinctive teardrop shape. This unique body form helps it blend seamlessly with its surroundings, providing excellent camouflage against predators.

True to its name, the cryptic teardrop crab is an expert at hiding. It often covers itself with algae, sponges, and other materials from its environment to enhance its camouflage. This behavior helps it avoid detection by both predators and prey. These crabs are relatively small, with an average carapace width of about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm). Despite their tiny size, their ability to blend into their environment makes them formidable survivors.

The cryptic teardrop crab is typically found in shallow coastal waters, often in seagrass beds, rocky substrates, and coral reefs. Its preference for these habitats provides it with plenty of opportunities to hide and find food. As omnivores, cryptic teardrop crabs have a varied diet that includes algae, detritus, small invertebrates, and organic matter. Their habits play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to clean up the ocean floor.
