Marine Life Fun Fact

Common dolphins have distinctive colouring with multiple colour bands along their sides. Predominantly black or dark grey in colour, forward of the dorsal fin their flanks have a flash of yellow whilst behind the dorsal fin it is white. This colouration forms a beautiful hourglass pattern on their sides. Although the taxonomic debate has finally been settled, there are some differences between the short-beaked and long-beaked common dolphins with the short-beaked slightly stockier than the long-beaked, possessing a more rounded melon and as its name suggests, a shorter beak.

Most people think of whales and dolphins as the stars of the marine mammal world but there are more animals to this group than just these fast swimming cetaceans. Pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), sea otters, and manatees are some of the other beautiful yet exciting marine mammals to see while scuba diving. These other marine mammal species can be found in a variety of locations throughout the world from the warm tropics all the way to the chilly poles. You’ll learn more about the causes of declining marine mammal populations and the actions you can take to become a knowledgeable and passionate marine mammal defender. By being informed, you can dispel misconceptions and act to protect marine mammals.
