As a diver, you have a unique connection to the underwater world. You’ve experienced the beauty and wonder of coral reefs, the majesty of sharks, and the diversity of marine life. But with that connection comes a responsibility to protect the ocean for future generations.

By participating in the Blue Oceans program, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills to become an ocean protector and advocate. You’ll learn about the threats facing our oceans and how you can take action to protect them.You’ll also learn about the benefits of marine protected areas and how they can help conserve marine ecosystems.

Mission Statement

The Blue Oceans programme is a comprehensive, educational resource that anyone can access. Whether you’re an experienced diver or a beginner, you can benefit from the programme’s four core topics and learn about the challenges facing our oceans. Plus, with the programme’s emphasis on sustainability and responsibility, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge needed to protect and preserve our ocean home for generations to come.

The Project AWARE Specialty course is an introduction to the global AWARE movement for ocean protection. It focuses and expands on the 10 Tips for Divers to Protect the Ocean Planet. Through interactive discussions, you’ll learn how you can make a difference for ocean protection every time you dive or travel. A dry, ‘fins off’ course, this specialty is ideal for divers and nondivers alike to gain insight into how decisions above and below the surface impact our water planet.

PADI Project AWARE / Blue Ocean Diver Specialty

It is a curious situation that the sea, from which life first arose, should now be threatened by the activities of one form of that life. But the sea, though changed in a sinister way, will continue to exist: the threat is rather to life itself.

Blue Ocean / PADI AWARE programmes address the key threats facing the marine environment, advance the blueprint for Ocean Action, support the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and engage the PADI Torchbearer Community. The course focuses on 5 key components:

Marine Debris
Shark & Ray Species Protection
Climate Change
Coral Reefs
Marine Protected Areas

Through classroom workshops, you will:

Be introduced to the Blue Oceans / AWARE movements.
Understand the 10 Tips for Divers to Protect the Ocean Planet.
Develop an action plan for how you can personally make a difference.

By joining the Blue Oceans movement, you’ll gain access to resources and tools that will help you become a sustainable diver and a responsible citizen.You’ll learn about the impact of human activities on our oceans and discover ways to minimize that impact. You’ll also learn about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and the role they play in sustaining life on our planet.
