Mission Statement
Upon completing the Coral Restoration Specialty, along with Invasive Species Management, you’ll earn the SSI Ocean Guardian Digital Card, recognising your commitment to ocean conservation. This course enhances your understanding of coral reefs and provides the knowledge to identify healthy versus degraded corals. You’ll gain skills to contribute to increasing coral cover and improving the resilience of these crucial ecosystems. The program emphasizes responsible interaction with reefs and promoting sustainable practices. Ultimately, the SSI Coral Reef Restoration Specialty is for divers passionate about playing an active role in preserving the beauty and biodiversity of our oceans for future generations.
Restoration of degraded reefs and coastal habitats on a scale that makes a difference must be an active environmental priority and not an afterthought. A revolutionary new technology called Biorock® can make this possible. The Biorock® Process involves divers submerging a steel structure that applies a safe low-voltage electrical current. Divers will attach small pieces of live broken coral are then strapped to the structure and have been shown to grow at 3-5 times the normal rate while coral survival under higher water temperatures and pollution increased by 16 to 50 times.
During your course programme, Academy divers will complete the following:
SSI / PADI Speciality, Introduction to Coral Fragmentation, Coral Health, the Biorock Process:
